Tales of Phantasia
Martel has always been the spirit tied to the great tree. Her initial appearance occured before Cess, during one of his hunting trips to the Forest of Spirits. She gives him a vision of the tree in its healthy form, and pleads for him not to hurt the tree. After Cess and his party travel to the past, the spirit of wind, Slyph, pleads with them to go and see Martel. As they arrive, Martel appears before them and warns them that Yggdrasill's death is coming. After the Magitech Canon is fired, Martel warns them that the mana is beginning to drastically fade. After the party's return to the future, Martel informs them that the tree is alright because the mana had returned.
Tales of Symphonia
Initially, Martel is known as a Goddess, to whom many of Sylvarant pray to every day. However, the truth is soon revealed to the new Chosen, Colette, that Martel is in fact only a half-elf, who was also the sister of Mithos. Mithos, who is known as a hero, turns out to be their enemy because of his desire to ressurect his dead sister. In the beginning, both Mithos and Martel were born as half-elves and therefore, born as outcasts. Unable to remain in their elven home, they were cast out, and Martel raised Mithos in place of a mother. She would worry over those within her group, such as Kratos and Yuan, having a very motherly and self-sacrificing nature, which is why she matches so well to Colette in her mana signature. Martel longed for the acceptance of all races, including half-elves, but never bore hatred to those that persecuted them. She did at one point, suffer from Chronic Angelus Crystallus Inofficium, a disease brought on by her Cruxis crystal and a disease Colette would also suffer from. Later on the cure was found, though it left Martel in a weakened physical state. Also, it seems at though she was engaged to Yuan Ka-Fai at one point.
During their quest, a human traitor who wanted control of the mana, killed Martel. Because her body had a Cruxis crystal, Martel's soul fused with it and Mithos was able to use the Eternal Sword to fuse her soul with the Great Seed, which was already dying from the massive amount of mana abuse. Panicked, Mithos created the Church of Martel in order to find someone with the same mana signature as his sister, thus the Chosens were created and the Regeneration Ritual was used to keep the world balanced in its fragile state. Also in order to create the proper vessel, Mithos began to control the marriages of both worlds to make Martel the perfect vessel. However, if Martel should be ressurected, one of the worlds would be lost.
Eventually the Great Tree grows out of control, threatening to engluf Martel, destroying thousands of years of hard work to revive her. At this point, Kratos and Lloyd use the Renegade's Mana Canon, and fire a large blast of mana at the Great Tree. This subdues the raging seed and puts it back to sleep, allowing Martel to fuse with it once more.
Eventually, Mithos' plan suceeds, and Martel is fused with Colette. At this point, Martel frowns upon Mithos' actions, telling him she is dislikes what he has done to the world, having only created a twisted misinterpritation of her final wish. At this point on of the heroes placed a Rune Crest on Colette and Martel was returned to her slumber, destroying all of Mithos' efforts. Colette then informs everyone that Martel had pleaded with her to stop Mithos, and to stop the pain he had caused. The party agrees and faces Mithos one last time, defeating him in the end and destroying his Cruxis crystal.
In the end, Lloyd uses the Eternal Sword to restore the Great Seed. When the Great Tree is revived, Martel is revived with it as the Spirit of the Great Tree. The souls use the vessel of Tabatha to take on a physical form, thus restoring her completely to a living form. In the end, Martel explains that Mithos' sister Martel, is only one of the many souls living within her.
