History:
"To travel into Mt. Roneal is foolish for one who is not prepared."
They had been warned many times over, yet for humans seeking power, they heard nothing. They did not fear the death that was waiting for them. They had been searching for years, searching for the ultimate treasure. And when rumor of it came from Keterburg, they had immediately decided that they would venture into the deadly ice mountain to take the treasure for their own. They had been warned by so many; almost all of Keterburg had told them not to go. But with determination clear in their gaze, they pressed on. The sun rose on the travelers, warming them with light and giving them a sense of hope. A vain and childish hope. As greedy eyes gazed upon the mountain, the eyes of beasts were locked on their new prey. As the couple entered, they did not feel the hundreds of eyes that were watching them very closely.
They could not see the white beast.
They traveled long, working their way up the mountain as the day passed them by. Beasts did emerge. Monsters of fangs and wings. But they all met their death at the end of the travelers' blades. Not long now... not long now! They would have their treasure and the lives they longed for. Excitement filled their bodies, and there was nothing to stop their drive as they pushed further and further up the mountain. Only the foolish eyes of a greedy man could not see that beast, and it followed them until they reached the top of the mountain. Nothing could stop them. Not the hungry birds nor the snowy giants. They slayed all that got in their path. But what no one could have noticed, was a small baby strapped to the female's back. Their child, who would never know them as parents.
As the top of the mountain neared, their anxiousness was nearly unbearable. Would they finally find the treasure they had searched the world for? Feet sank deep into the snow as they stopped, and scanned the area around them. They had reached the top of the mountain and yet... there had been no entrance on the way, and there was nothing to be seen at the top. Tired and defeated, they sat and peered down at the world below them. The city of Keterburg was so small, little lights illuminating it. As they rested, preparing to take the long and sad trip back down, it seemed their time was up. From the snow, it emerged. A wolf of pure white, much larger than a normal wolf, and with fangs sharper than blades. The couple drew their blades, but the strength they had mustered before had faded away with their disappointment.
Fangs tore flesh, splattered bloody onto pure snow. It wasn't long before the great wolf had finished them, white fur colored a bright crimson. But it was then that it heard a cry, a baby calling for its mother. Sniffing the child, it prepared to kill another. But the wolf stopped, and stared at the baby. A child of golden ringlets and gray hues. The child had not yet been contaminated by its parents. And so, the wolf stole the baby, and decided to raise her as its own.
The child grew, like any other, but surrounded in cold and ice. She never parted from her mother at first, her mother's fur being the only way for the naked child to remain warm. But when she reached the tender age of seven, she was forced to earn her place among the pack. And so, she was forced to fight one of the other wolves who was--by the wolves' standards--her age. The wolf was much large than her, but would serve well as a means to keep warm if she won. And so, the young girl took hold of a spike of ice, and prepared herself.
The wolf lunged out, fangs snapping, threatening to kill her then and there. She pulled back just in time, and fell to her side. Rolling away, she managed to avoid the fangs once more, but she couldn't run forever. Her human skin was beginning to freeze without her mother, and she knew she wouldn't last long. The wolf child lunged again, and this time, the human child stood still and allowed the beast to sink its fangs into her left arm. And then with her right, she drove the ice deep into the wolf's eyes. As it howled, she only drove it deeper and deeper until finally... the beast lay still. Standing, legs shaking from the cold and the adrenaline, the child felt a sense of pride fill her. And so her mother came forward, allowing the child to warm herself while her mother skinned the slain wolf. After the skin had dried, the child fashioned the fur so it could be worn. With the tail and ears still upon the fur, she finally felt as though she was one of the pack, able to stand on her own without needing her mother's warmth. She was still unable to hunt, being so young. And so her mother still hunted for her, and taught her daughter so that one day the child would be able to hunt as well.
Many travelers still came to Mt. Roneal, all of which became a meal, but it was one man who would give the wolf girl what she needed. He carried on him, a pair of claws that the young girl was able to fashion to herself. To keep the metal warm, she wrapped them in left-over fur from the young wolf she had defeated. She truly had become a beast, capable of making it on her own. But still, she remained with her mother. The years passed, and she became an child of fifteen when finally, she was forced out into the world. Many warriors came, having heard of the great wolf. With the intention of selling her furs and meat, they threatened the wolf girl in order to subdue the great wolf. Having grown to care for the human girl like a true daughter, the great wolf surrendered and allowed them to take her life. Enraged, a new part of the wolf girl was born, and as she blacked out, another side of her emerged and slaughtered the people who had killed her mother. When she awoke, she was drenched in blood, tears spilling from her eyes. Remembering her mother, she ran to the wolf and begged her to hold on. But the wolf was unable to do so, having taken so much damage all to save her daughter. The girl knew that others would come for her mother's fur. And so, as her mother passed on, the girl took her mother's fur and left her home of Mt. Roneal.
Many others did come, but found no fur upon the body and the meat had already been taken by the other beasts of the mountain. They would gain nothing from the great wolf. No one could tell that the girl who left, covered in the pelt of a white wolf, was actually the daughter of the great beast. The girl left quickly, and entered the town of Keterburg. Though she loathed humans greatly, she needed to disappear from the mountain for a while. The girl hid between houses, never showed herself. But a small boy did find her one day and asked for her name. She could not answer. Not only because she had never learned to speak, but also because she hadn't been given a name. Curious about learning, she perched herself upon a tree branch by the school. And each day as the children learned, she would learn along with them. Eventually, she would decide on a name she wanted.
Ethereal: Characterized by lightness and insubstantiality; something that is intangible.
As a being who had never really existed, she came to like the name. And so when the little boy found her again, and asked if she had gained a name, she was able to answer. Each day, she learned, and she stayed that way for four years until the age of nineteen. Though her ability to speak was still rough, at least now she could manage. But she still lacked a home, and her only means of hunting was to hunt her own food. Though a natural beauty, any would be discouraged by the blood smears across her face. Though she had perched herself outside of the school for four years, only two actually knew of her existence. The teacher, who had opened the windows every day so Ethereal could hear better, and the little boy who had asked for her name.
She could have lived a life of peace this way, but no story ever has a happy ending for a beast does it? On an early morning, as she woke outside the school, men surrounded her. A girl who was a beast? They would make a fortune. They seized the poor girl and shoved her into a cage. Laughing amongst themselves, they left her there in the cage and decided to visit the pub to celebrate. They stayed there until night, and returned in the morning. The bars were covered in deep scratches, bloody pooling under her fingers from trying to escape. They took her, boarded a ship, and headed for Grand Chokma. Once there, they used her day and night to get money,
"Step right up, see the wolf girl! She can talk to your animals, speak the language of the beasts!"
Though she attempted to disobey, the men would beat her until she complied. It went on for days and days. Having made so much money, they decided to venture off to celebrate. They spent days, throwing their money at booze and women. However, when they returned, she was no where to be found.
None of them had noticed the blue light hours before that had surrounded her and taken her away.
