WISH UPON A STAR
LIKES ::
minoru is a big fan of alcohol, and can drink quite a bit of it before feeling its effects. having been drinking so long he has built up quite the tolerance for it. he eats a lot of seafood, rice dishes, and fresh fruit, most likely because it's not only easy to prepare, but also what was common in his hometown. he has always been fascinated by stars and astronomy, and spends long hours staring up at the night sky simply observing it. he enjoys reading and more than often has books with him, typically non-fiction as he prefers learning over being entertained by storybooks. stormy weather always seems to put him in a good mood, however nothing brings a smile to his face like gald does.
DISLIKES ::
it wouldn't be wrong to call minoru a lazy person, as he really cannot stand hard work. sweets have always made him sick to his stomach, and he absolutely hates noisy children. while he isn't afraid of them, monsters seem to bother him. he doesn't like when they distract him from his travels, and is quick to kill any animal that irritates him. having never been a patient person, waiting seems to be another thing he strongly dislikes. he rarely waits long, and when a person is late he doesn't hesitate to leave before giving them more time to show up. he doesn't handle arrogance well, and people who constantly ask questions chip away at what little patience he has quickly. silence makes him uneasy, which is why he is usually whistling when alone.
FEARS ::
minoru is allergic to cats, and seems to be absolutely terrified of them for some reason. he dodges away from them whenever they come close, and glares at them whenever he spots them far away. he's been known to kill them for trying to come near him.
small spaces seem to be a huge problem for him. being closed in is just too much for him, and sends him into an absolute panic. he often insists he is going to die when he finds himself in a tight space.
minoru is cynical and very much fears being betrayed. he keeps a close eye on his friends and is constantly suspicious of them, often asking questions and second guessing their motives.
HOBBIES ::
minoru has picked up the unusual hobby of calligraphy. he can sit for hours with ink and a pen or brush and write. he never seems to write anything important, he just finds that the careful motions and focus it requires are soothing to him and help him to collect his thoughts.
he spends a considerable amount of time writing letters. they are written to no one in particular, and usually just summarize his thoughts of the day or his opinions on certain matters. rather than send them out, he promptly burns them after they are written.
reading. minoru has gone through a lot of books in his lifetime, but still manages to find new things to read. he prefers informative books to stories, but honestly doesn't mind fiction as long as it is well written.
having spent so much time traveling it's grown to become something that he truly enjoys doing. while the silence does get to him now and then, he enjoys having time and space alone to himself. the constant change of scenery helps him to never be bored.
as much as minoru loves money it's no surprise he enjoys gambling. he feels rather at home in casinos and seems to enjoy losing as much as winning. as long as he's betting, he's having a good time.
QUIRKS ::
minoru is one of those people that always knows the direction he is facing. he doesn't get lost easily and has no trouble mapping areas out in his head.
it is usually easy to tell when he is nearby because he is always whistling. it is usually a tell that he is bored and tired of the quiet around him.
he has the odd habit of always walking in the middle of the road, forcing people to move around or shoulder past him. it can be a pain for others in crowded areas, but he doesn't seem to notice, or care for that matter. when it is pointed out to him he acts completely innocent, as if he didn't realize what he was doing.
minoru has always been a thrifty person. he can calculate costs easily in his head and always budgets himself, constantly haggling with traders and shop owners for a better deal.
as if writing letters to no one wasn't strange enough, as soon as the letter is written he burns it. he claims the letters are to his deceased family.
GOALS ::
currently all of his previous goals are taking a back seat as he tries to figure out where the hell he is. he is rather uncomfortable in this new world, knowing so little about it has put him on edge, and he is curious as to how he got there in the first place.
HISTORY ::
minoru was one of the earlier chosen of regeneration, born to a bickering couple in the small village of mizuho. when he was seen to be gripping an expsphere tightly in his hand, his parents were absolutely disgusted. mizuho had its own gods, its own beliefs. mizuho did everything it could to remain separate from the church, as well as the rest of tethe'alla. he was unwanted, and viewed as a nuisance and a curse. they were quick to take him to the capital and discuss his future plans with the king and the church. it was agreed that he would be allowed to stay with his parents until he was in need of a more advanced education than he would be able to receive in his hometown. when he turned thirteen, he would be expected to move to meltokio, where he would stay until it was time to rejuvenate the world.
minoru was given no special treatment in his hometown. as a child he was never told what it was that made him different, but he knew something was off. while he wasn't granted any favors or treated as if he were a particularly important person, he was always looked at differently. the other children of the village always watched him whenever he was nearby, their eyes narrowed in a distrusting manner as their lips twisted in disgust, but he never understood why. it caused him to become isolated. his younger brother, chihaya, was only one year younger than himself. it seemed he was much more comfortable in social situations. though he was the older brother, he was often caught following him around, doing whatever he did and talking to whoever his brother chose to talk to. chihaya had taken on the role of elder brother before long, and the two got along rather well.
chihaya knew what minoru was. he had always kept it secret from him for fear of getting in trouble with their parents. in all honesty he pitied his brother, he didn't like that his fate was being kept hidden from him, and it bothered him even more that he was hated for it. one night when minoru was sleeping, chihaya went to speak to their mother and father. but he overheard them talking, minoru was scheduled to leave at the end of the year. he would only be allowed to stay for the new year's festival. chihaya decided against telling him, figuring his parents would do it themselves. however when it was finally the night of the festival and minoru was still in his usual, rather upbeat mood, chihaya could tell no one had told him anything. over the last few months he had scraped and saved to get something special for minoru, thinking it would be nice for him to have something to remember the town by. while watching the fireworks, chihaya gave him a fox mask as a gift, and minoru happily accepted it. however his mood quickly changed with what came next. he was told he would be leaving mizuho tomorrow morning, and that their parents were at home packing his things. when he was told he wouldn't be coming back he was confused. looking for some ray of hope he asked his brother if he would be coming with him. chihaya reassured him he wouldn't leave him, telling him it was a stupid question. though he was relieved, he couldn't shake the sadness. chihaya pointed out the exsphere on his chest, informing him that it wasn't a treasure passed down from generation to generation. it was in fact proof that he was the chosen. finally minoru understood. chihaya kept talking, but minoru refused to respond. giving up, his younger finally left him to watch the rest of the fireworks alone, going to bed early.
surely enough, the next morning minoru was told he was going on a "surprise trip." apparently chihaya had come down with a cold and his parents would have to stay behind to care for him. they said they would follow once he got better. he got his things and left town just after sunrise, deciding against waking up his brother to say good bye. he traveled with a few warriors, none of which seemed to want to speak with him. it was a long journey before they finally got to the bridge, where they stopped to meet with a group of guards, all surrounding a regal-looking priest. the ninjas left as he continued on from there, the priest coming along with him, spending the rest of the journey explaining minoru's destiny. minoru just sat quietly, refusing to speak. it angered the priest, and from that moment on the priest had a great disliking for the boy.
when he arrived in meltokio his things were unpacked for him. he was given new clothes, ones more befitting a meltokio noble, and assigned servants and guards to watch over him. he was expected to start school the next day. he was treated much differently in meltokio than he had been in mizuho. his old town distanced itself from the church and anything having to do with it, but in his new town he was seen someone truly amazing. he was rare, and he was desirable. their source of hope. having so many people flock to him and try to get his attention made him uneasy, and he was quick to retreat to his house after school. he was given a trainer to show him how to use a sword, however he proved to be a difficult student. he could never get the stances right, and always reverted back to the style of a ninja. seeing as how he had spent most of his life in mizuho, it only made sense. finally the church spent a few extra gald to hire a ninja to teach him, an outcast from mizuho. he never did well in school, he hated studying, and it caused his grades to drop. the priest was displeased with this, stopping by his home often to scold him, saying he was giving the church a bad name, and that he wasn't properly representing the goddess martel. but he was distracted, he hadn't heard from his parents or his brother, and it had been quite a long time.
it took a while before he got the hint. his parents weren't coming for him. and his brother wasn't coming either. he began to carry his mask everywhere with him, deciding to focus on his studies rather than his lack of a family. spending so much time reading he advanced quickly, beginning to move to the top of his class. he went through many tutors, and after a while, he had reached the top. while some students began to envy him for this, others were amazed. they tried harder and harder to bring him out of his shell, and out of his house. some looking for money, others were looking for status. he never met a person who genuinely wanted to get to know him. however one day he received a letter in the mail. it was from his brother. minoru was quick to respond, and soon there were many letters exchanged between the two. these letters only further isolated him from the world around him. he was focused on world regeneration, self-image, and his letters. nothing else mattered.
the time came and he was sent on his journey to regenerate the world. with each seal he could feel his humanity slipping away from him, and it was beginning to frighten him. while he thought he had mentally prepared himself for it, it was too much. when he finally reached the tower and regained his ability to speak, he couldn't stop his words from spilling out. he found himself pleading with the angel to let him live. the angel never replied verbally, but after his cries had stopped he felt power coursing through his veins. it swelled up within him, it was even more power than what he was used to. in a flash of light he found himself on derris kharlan.
he was allowed to live there in exchange for working for yggdrasill. decades had passed before he was allowed to go back to tethe'alla. and of course the first thing he did was go to mizuho in search of his brother. however it seemed his brother had already died, years ago. no one in the town recognized him, and he recognized very few of them. it had been too long. he bought himself a new mask in his brother's memory, nearly identical to the old one, before going to meltokio. it too had changed. while he was there it seemed it would be his job to see to it that the next chosen made it to the tower. he was not allowed to get close to anyone he met, and followed the chosen in secret, deciding against letting his presence be known. it seemed the only company he was allowed was in derris kharlan. when the chosen finally died, he returned to welgaia, on derris kharlan. over the years he guided his fair share of chosen to the tower, and often went down to do reconnaissance for cruxis. while he was never a particularly important member, he was kept busy.
when yggdrasill finally fell he ran to escape derris kharlan and return back to the surface. he made it, and fortunately he wasn't the only one. along with many others, two of his friends had come along with him, and he traveled the world with them for quite some time before they decided to split apart. years passed before he got a letter from one of them, asking if he would like to meet up again. and so they decided they would meet in meltokio in one year. but before that one year was up, minoru found himself awakening in a strange new world. Suiren.
INTO THE WEST
SAMPLE POST ::
The pirate's quietly echoing footsteps did not go unnoticed by Nihle, however she continued to sit quietly with her back turned, taking the next bit of bread from her lap and putting it to her mouth. She assumed it was just another sailor lost in the giant city, or maybe someone who had docked their ship nearby. Still, had she known he was a pirate, she probably would have paid him a bit more attention. She found it difficult to pull herself from the daze the ocean and stars and lulled her into. Her eyelids slid drowsily over her stormy eyes as she slipped further and further away from reality. She was too far gone to realize the man had settled himself not far away from her. That is, until he spoke up. she said flatly. She certainly didn't sound startled. Straightening back up, she reached around and picked up her hat, flicking her wrist to dust it a bit before setting back on her head. Gathering the food on her lap she pulled it up to her chest and pushed herself from the ground, stretching her back as she got to her feet.
"Well now, it seems someone beat me here."
Her drooped shoulders rose quickly as her body tightened up. She leaned back slowly, her relaxed expression still on her face as she tilted her head to see Gil perched on the rock. Her cap fell from its place, and her deep blue hair fell away from her eyes as she did her best to examine him in the dark, upside-down. "You startled me,"
Taking the brim of her cap in her fingers, she pulled it into place over her eyes, adjusting it a few times until she was satisfied. She turned slowly to face Vash before allowing her arm to fall back to her side, hoping that the movement would distract him from her scrutinizing gaze. It was customary for her to examine and pick apart a person's appearance when first meeting them, but she always did her best to hide it since most people found such a thing to be rude, some sort of "invasion of privacy." Unfortunately, it was difficult to see too well in the dark, even with her eyes adjusted. From what she could see he was a rather feminine-looking man, garbed in strange clothes. At least, in her opinion they seemed strange.
From his words she figured he had planned to come here earlier. She figured she would end up a nuisance if she stuck around. "I'm sorry… Were you planning to meet someone here?" Really, it was none of her business, but Nihle had always been one to ask questions. Tightening the grip on the roll in her hand she pursed her lips, turning her head away as she lifted a finger to push her glasses higher onto the bridge of her nose. "Ah, nevermind." At least she had managed to catch herself that time. She turned her blue eyes back to the man as she placed the roll back in her arm. "I can go if you'd like..." Her voice trailed off, most likely because she was becoming mesmerized by the stolen fruit he was holding.[/blockquote]
